It is with immense gratitude and deep sadness that we bid farewell to Geneviève Appell, psychologist, author of numerous writings, and one of the most important pioneers—alongside Myriam David—of Pikler pedagogy worldwide.
As Emmi Pikler's long-time partner, Geneviève Appell played a decisive role in spreading and successfully implementing the principles of this unique educational approach beyond national borders. The team at the Lóczy Institute in Budapest also learned a great deal from her. She enriched this educational approach in a lasting way.
With her keen sense of observation of children, her deep respect for their autonomy, and her impressive clarity of expression, she inspired generations of professionals.
Geneviève Appell was not only the first recipient of the Pikler® Prize, but also an outstanding thinker, translator, and transmitter of knowledge. Through her numerous articles and publications, she contributed greatly to spreading understanding of children and the importance of sensitive support in the international professional world.
We are particularly proud that she wrote a text especially for Pikler International, which we will continue to make available in her honor:
Rencontrer Emmi Pikler et ses collaboratrices.
De l'Accueil lóczien au Prendre soin piklérien – D'hier à aujourd'hui (1967–2014) https://piklerinternational.com/en/documents-events/documents
This text is a moving summary of her deep understanding and decades of experience in Pikler pedagogy – a tribute to Emmi Pikler and the many women who have carried on and developed this approach.
We salute a life filled with commitment, wisdom, and integrity. Her eternal open-mindedness, joie de vivre, and human warmth, which were evident in every encounter, will also remain unforgettable.
Geneviève Appell lives on in our work.

Paulette Jaquet Travaglini:
‘The time before mealtime – How children experience this moment’
How does a child experience the time before their own meal, while another child is being fed or cared for during this time? Paulette Jaquet Travaglini's presentation focuses on a central everyday situation: the time before mealtime. She shows how this moment can become a meaningful experience for children's development.
Using long-term video observations in a facility inspired by Pikler pedagogy, she highlights the conditions that provide children with security and guidance in a clear and understandable way. This time is not experienced as mere passive waiting, but as a moment to oneself, supported by a dynamic of taking turns and the prospect of a special moment with the educator. Everyone knows when their turn will come, which structures the child's experience and allows them to engage actively and independently in this moment, interacting with their environment and their peers.
About Paulette Jaquet Travaglini
Paulette Jaquet combines two professional perspectives – nursing and psychology – with a clear focus on early childhood. As the long-time director of a nursery with 80 places, many of which are for children under the age of two, she has intensively explored the question of how an individual and lasting relationship with young children is possible in a collective setting.
Her encounter with Pikler pedagogy, inspired by a lecture by Anna Tardos, was a turning point in her life. In close collaboration with her team, she has implemented a profound transformation of the pedagogical concept over several years, moving towards an approach characterised by respect, attention and quality relationships.
Paulette Jaquet Travaglini has been an active member of the board of directors of the Pikler International association since its inception. This presentation is part of the Pikler International General Assembly.

We are delighted to present Anja Zagoričnik Jarm from Slovenia as the recipient of this year’s Scholarship for an course in english in Budapest at the Pikler House. Her dedication to sharing Piklerian principles in parenting and professional fields has become a heartfelt mission.
Inspired by her experiences as a mother Anja began incorporating the core values of respectful care, autonomous play, and self-initiated motor development into her daily life. This passion led her to start Pikler training in February 2023, deepening her understanding and inspiring her to support others.
She now shares these transformative ideas through parent-child groups, workshops for parents, and in sessions on the importance of touch and relationships with registered nurses. Her work also extends to schools for expectant parents, and she is beginning to bring these practices into daycare centers and educational institutions.
"This approach resonates in body, mind, and soul," Anja shares. "It feels right, and I will continue sharing it with all who are interested." Pikler International is happy to support her on her journey.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Liz Hagermann, Debbie Laurin and Rachel Tapping for their careful selection.
